Revere approves Mohegan Sun casino project

REVERE, Mass. (WWLP) – Rejected in Palmer, approved in Revere. Mohegan Sun’s casino plan moves forward.

22News spent the day in Revere and was with Mohegan Sun supporters as the results came in.

Mohegan Sun will get a 2nd chance for a Massachusetts casino license, this time at Suffolk Downs in Revere.

Revere voters approved Mohegan Sun’s casino project 63% to 37%, although those results are still unofficial.

Mohegan Sun supporters breathed a sigh of relief, celebrating their victory.

After losing its referendum in Palmer on November 5th by less than 100 votes, Mohegan Sun moved forward with casino plans at Suffolk Downs. Now Mohegan Sun will compete for the eastern Massachusetts casino license.

“The reality is I think we had a higher margin of victory than the previous election and more people voted yes for this casino in Revere tonight (Tuesday) than voted in the entire election in Everett”, said Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority CEO Mitchell Etess.

The Massachusetts gaming commission will choose between Mohegan Sun and Wynn in Everett for the eastern Mass casino license. That decision is expected by the end of June.

MGM is the only applicant left in Western Massachusetts. The gaming commission is expected to decided if MGM will be awarded a gaming license by the end of May.
