CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Potholes have been a major problem this season all over western Massachusetts. 22news has been on the road to show you just how bad some of the potholes have gotten.
22News mounted a camera to the outside of one of our vehicles to show you the potholes around western Massachusetts. Unlike most cars, we went to seek out potholes instead of driving around them.
As you may know, potholes are caused by the freezing and thawing of water that gets into cracks of the road. As water in cracks freezes, it expands. The constant driving over it by cars just splits open the road into a shape of a pot, that’s where the term pothole comes from.
There are various fixes for potholes. In the winter, the only effective fix is to use a cold patch, or emulsified asphalt which is a liquid and stone combination which works better than a cold patch but it’s a bit more expensive. Hot patch is ideal, but usually isn’t’ available until April.
