NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – State environmental crews spent most of Monday morning cleaning up a fuel spill in Northampton.
22News has been following this story since Sunday night, when a boat was found tipped over at Northampton’s Oxbow Marina.
Northampton Fire and Mass DEP crews were called to the marina Sunday night. Officials from the MassDEP told 22News that they believe uneven snow loading led to the boat tipp a week from this past Sunday.
DEP personnel told 22News that the fuel leak appears to be a minor release. They estimated the fuel tank held 10-15 gallons of gasoline, but it’s unclear just how much of it was released from the tank.
A sheen was noticed Sunday night, but the area has been contained with floating booms. Mass DEP says they’ve also used appropriate absorbent pads and materials that work to remove fuel from the water.
The owner of the marina is working with a contractor to right the boat safely and remove any remaining fuel in the tank.
