Man found dead in Stanley Park identified

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The young man whose lifeless body was found at Stanley Park on Sunday was a Westfield State University student, the school says.

According to a statement from WSU’s President, Dr. Elizabeth Preston, police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of student Kevin Friedland, and that the university is also keeping up with developments.

On Sunday night, Westfield Police Sgt. Jay Pitoniak told 22News that the 19 year-old’s body was found near a bridge in the park just before 11:00 A.M. by a skier and a person riding a bicycle. Pitoniak said that the young man had taken his own life.

Preston said that the university is working with its counseling center and residential life staff to help students cope with the loss.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to Kevin’s family and friends for their profound loss,” Preston said. “It is heartbreaking to lose a member of our community, and we are all affected by Kevin’s death.”

Friedland, a sophomore biology major, was from the town of Marshfield, on the South Shore of Massachusetts.
