Dominican flag raised over Springfield City Hall

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Saturday was a day of celebration for families from the Dominican Republic who now live here in Western Massachusetts.

Dominicans raised their flag over Springfield City Hall. It was on February 27th, 1844 when the Caribbean island nation won its independence. Retired high school teacher Pedro Payano and his family settled in Springfield.

“Someday there won’t be no more borders. People will live united as human beings,” said Payano.

There was dancing at the steps of Springfield City Hall during this annual celebration. Many flags have been raised over City Hall as an expression of welcome to a population made up of people representing many nationalities.
