Tax exemption for seniors in Northampton

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Northampton seniors could qualify for property tax exemption. 22News found out how this program can save you some cash.

Under state law there are several categories of people who may be eligible for a reduction if not an exemption on their property tax. This includes seniors, veterans, surviving spouses, and the blind.

Exemptions are granted for one year only and a new application must be filed each year. The goal of the program is to help seniors be able to live comfortably in their own homes.

“Anything that is reduced on their property tax is a financial benefit. We all hope that seniors and disabled can maintain their homes by being able to pay their property tax to stay there,” said Patricia Shaughnessy of the Northampton Council.

Another program, called the Circuit Breaker, also assists seniors in paying their property tax when payments exceed 10 percent of a senior citizen’s annual income.

There are income requirements in order to qualify. A single person cannot make more than 28,000 a year and a couple no more than 30,000.
