Local Prof.: Ukraine conflict about power struggle

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) – Over in the eastern European country of Ukraine, the death toll climbed as police re-launched a violent attack against protestors.

The protest began in November when the Ukrainian President rejected a trade deal with the European Union to maintain the country’s ties with Russia.

Mt. Holyoke College Professor Stephen Jones told 22News the clash between the government and the protestors has now become part of a bigger power struggle between Western Europe and Russia.

“It is again part of this sort of post-Cold War conflict that continues,” said Jones. “I don’t believe that the United States or Russia really want this to get out hand. They want to see a solution, but reflecting their own particular interests.”

Professor Jones said the best solution at this point may be calling for an early election, as suggested by Western European countries.
