WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WWLP)– After several weeks of pothole issues, the Route 5 tunnel in West Springfield is closed for repairs.
At 9:00 Wednesday morning, MassDOT crews closed the tunnel, which runs underneath the North End Bridge Rotary. The tunnel has been closed on and off for pothole issues since the beginning of the year, but this repair work is expected to last six weeks.
In January there were more than a dozen cars had to be towed away after they suffered tire or rim damage.
Here’s what this road closure means for you:
- You will need to get off Route 5 before the tunnel and go up the ramp onto the rotary. You will have to travel around the rotary to get back on Route 5 on the other side.
- Your other option is to use I-91 in order to cross over the river twice. Either way, you are going to want to give yourself extra time if you use Route 5 near or around the center of West Springfield.
