Snow buildup causing risks

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Several rounds of snow in the last two weeks are causing snow to pile up.  22News working for you with ways to protect you and your home from all that heavy snow.

Snow on your home’s roof can create problems.  As heat escapes from your home and melts the snow along the gutter line, that snow re-freezes during the coldest parts of the day and can create an ice damn.

That can build up under your shingles and force water to back up into your home.

Clearing that section of snow just above your gutters after each snow can help prevent that from happening.

Another concern with all the snow is the large snow banks that are piling along streets.

Northampton police told 22News in past years, snow piles, like the ones on the median and corners of Main Street, have been hauled away, but they don’t know when that is scheduled to happen this year.

In the meantime police urge drivers to use extra caution as these piles are making it difficult to see oncoming cars and pedestrians.

Also keep in mind that as temperatures warm a little during the day, there is some melting happening.  Those melted patches are re-freezing over night and that is causing some icy spots. If you’re driving or walking during the coldest times of day, and an area of the road or sidewalk looks like a wet spot, use caution, it is likely an icy patch.
