SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A warning for people getting ready to file their 2013 tax returns. More and more taxpayers are finding themselves locked out of tax filing systems because someone else has beat them to their own tax refund.
Springfield Tax Attorney Paul Mancinone told 22News thieves are stealing people’s social security numbers and are entering fake income information online to steal tax refund money. To protect yourself from this type of tax identity fraud, Mancinone urges you to keep an eye on who has your personal information.
“Does the store have a window and they have an open file that you can see from the street? Is it a protected computer server? These are really important questions that we should be asking mortgage companies, car dealers, any place that offers financing to the public,” said Mancinone.
Mancinone said it could take years to correct this kind of tax refund fraud.
