Arrest made a year after store owner stabbed and beaten

Alfredo Aldeco, 27, Holyoke.

HOLYOKE (WWLP)-  A 27-year-old city man was arrested Saturday for an armed robbery that occurred more than a year ago.

Alfredo Aldeco is charged with a straight warrant, default warrant, and a fugitive warrant out of Connecticut.  He was also in possession of cocaine at the time of his arrest, according to a press release issued by Lt. Jim Albert of the Holyoke Police Department.

Holyoke Police located Aldeco during a traffic stop on Nick Cosmos Way and took him into custody without incident, Lt. Albert said.

Aldeco was wanted in one of the warrants for a connection to the February 8, 2013 armed robbery of The Source of New York on High Street.  In that warrant, he is charged with assault with intent to murder and assault by means of a dangerous weapon.

The owner of The Source of New York was brutally assaulted and stabbed during the robbery attempt, Lt. Albert said.

Aldeco is the second suspect in the case.  In December 2013, his alleged accomplice, Ivan Laguna, 42, of Springfield, plead guilty to armed robbery while masked, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, and intimidation of a witness in Hampden Superior Court before Judge Edward McDonough.  Laguna was sentenced to 8-12 years in State prison.

Judge McDonough had noted at the time that “these crimes were committed in a particularly brutal, terrifying manner,” Lt. Albert said.

Holyoke Police Detective Jennifer Sattler of the Criminal Investigations Bureau had conducted the investigation and sought a warrant for Aldeco as he allegedly fled the area after the armed robbery.

Aldeco was held in Holyoke Police lock up without the right to bail and is expected to be arraigned in Holyoke District Court Tuesday.
