SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Police have released the name of the driver killed in a crash on Boston Road in Springfield early Wednesday morning, as well as new details about the accident.
Police Sgt. John Delaney notified 22News that Jeffrey M. Merigian, 50, of Hampden was killed in the crash, which happened just before 1:00 A.M. near the corner of Boston Road and Slater Avenue.
According to Delaney, police found Merigian’s Cadillac CTS on the sidewalk and in a snowbank in front of Siano’s Restaurant. The car had struck a guardrail, and a piece of the guardrail was sticking through the front windshield.
Delaney says that there were downed power lines in the area, and it took a while before it was safe for emergency crews to get to Merigian, who had died.
Early reports show that speed was the cause of the crash, Delaney said, but police are still looking into what happened.
