MA child rape suspect caught in N.Y.

ALBANY, N.Y. (WWLP) –A man from Massachusetts accused of raping a young girl over an eight year time period was arrested at an upstate New York hotel Monday night, state police say.

According to a news release sent to 22News by the Massachusetts State Police, Robert Cerqua, 58, of Southborough, was arrested by New York troopers at an Econo Lodge in Albany.

Earlier in the day on Monday, Massachusetts State Police were alerted by Southborough police to be on the lookout for Cerqua. After checking nearby hotels, police learned that the suspect might be in the Albany area. Troopers say they contacted New York State Police, who spotted Cerqua’s car outside the Econo Lodge, and made their arrest after obtaining a warrant.

Cerqua faces several charges including two counts of aggravated rape of a child, indecent assault and battery on a child over 14, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and dissemination of obscene material to a juvenile.
