SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Governor Deval Patrick was in Springfield Tuesday to ask the legislature to continue funding an important program here.
He and community leaders gathered at the Salvation Army to talk about the Safe and Successful Youth Initiative. The program works with young adults who have committed crimes or are going down the wrong path.
James Lewis-Brown told 22News the program turned his life around.
“I was a victim of a drive-by shooting, got shot in the head and lost my right eye, so for the rest of my life that will be a constant reminder because I don’t have my right eye anymore and I’m just trying to do the right thing now, continue to work with these people,” said Lewis-Brown.
Program leaders say funding has been chopped over the years, but because it’s been so successful they’re hoping to bring it up again to help make the community a safer place.
