Effort to raise the debt ceiling now moves to the Senate

WASHINGTON (NBC News) – The House of Representatives has passed an extension of the nation’s debt limit.

28 Republicans joined all but two Democrats to increase the government’s borrowing authority until March of 2015.

The final vote was 221 to 201.

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew says the government will be unable to pay its bills at month’s end if the limit isn’t increased.

Republicans had wanted to attach conditions to the legislation, including approving the Keystone Pipeline or restoring some pension benefits for military retirees, but G.O.P. leaders couldn’t win enough votes for those add ons.
