Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge shooter identified

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – 19 year old Edgar Zayas was arrested after allegedly shooting at people walking on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge between Holyoke and South Hadley this weekend and there are new details about exactly what happened.

Lt. Jim Albert told 22News Zayas told them he ingested PCP and was very depressed. Police encountered Zayas on the bridge with a .44-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver.

He refused to drop the weapon. After a standoff, he was tackled from behind by an officer, and lost control of the gun. No one was hurt.

Zayas faces several charges, including assault with intent to murder and possession of a firearm without a permit. He’ll be in Holyoke District Court Monday morning.

A 12 year old boy was also arrested and charged with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
