WATERBURY — Mr. Giovanni (John) Gesualdo, 99, passed away peacefully at his home on Feb. 3, 2014, surrounded by his family. He had been predeceased by his wife of 75 years, Giovannina Gesualdo.
Giovanni was born in Cercemaggiore, Campobasso, Italy, on Nov. 21, 1914, the son of the late Domenico and Maria Gesualdo. He served with distinction in the Italian Army during World War II. He was captured by British forces in North Africa and served as a prisoner of war from 1940 to 1945 in both India and the United Kingdom. Upon his release at the end of the war, Mr. Gesualdo emigrated first to Peru and then to Venezuela.
After his return to Italy, he emigrated to America in 1956 with his family to provide to them all of the opportunities available here. He was a retired barber, having worked at the Palm Barber Shop in Waterbury for many years.
Giovanni is survived by his children, Domenic Gesualdo and his wife, Darlene, of Shelby Township, Mich., Attorney Phyllis Ryan and her husband, Gary Cassanelli, of Suffield, Angel McCabe and her husband, Stephen, of Pawcatuck, and Michael Gesualdo and his wife, Gina, of Coconut Creek, Fla.; his grandchildren, Lt. Michael-Ryan McCabe USN and his wife Lt. Alison McCabe USN, John Gesualdo, Michael-Peter Gesualdo, and Gianna Gesualdo. He was predeceased by his sisters, Rose Petraroia and Domenica D’Amico.
Giovanni was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He cherished every day of life as a gift and passed that love of life on to his children and grandchildren. He taught them all that any dream can be achieved if you believe in yourself and work hard to attain it and was so very proud of them. He was a longtime communicant of St. Lucy’s Church in Waterbury.
Arrangements: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Church, Watertown. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery. A calling hour will be held at St. John the Evangelist Church from 9 to 10 a.m. Funeral services have been entrusted to Chase Parkway Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway, Waterbury.
