SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A man who just recently got out of jail has been arrested again, after police allegedly caught him carrying heroin and a loaded gun after leaving a post-release program.
Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News that Martin Fernandez, 21, of Springfield was arrested by members of the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms task force on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Delaney, Fernandez had left After Incarceration Support Services on State Street around 3:15, when police detectives received word that the former inmate was carrying a loaded gun when he left.
Fernandez was seen getting into a red Ford Taurus, which officers spotted at Wilbraham Road and Alden Street. There, Delaney says members of the ATF task force surrounded the car, and Fernandez reached for a .44 magnum revolver that was in his pants.
Delaney says that Fernandez spat and kicked at the officers, who were able to get him into custody.
In addition to the gun, which was reported stolen in a 2012 housebreak on Mohegan Avenue, Delaney says police found 49 bags of heroin in Fernandez’s pocket, and $129 in cash.
Fernandez faces several charges, including possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of heroin with intent to distribute, receiving stolen property, and resisting arrest. Police are requesting that he be held on $50,000 cash bail.
