NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – A gun task force has released its recommendation to tighten gun laws in the state. 22News is working for you with a breakdown of the findings.

The task force was assembled by House Speaker Robert DeLeo following the Newtown school massacre. The panel has released its recommendations.

The panel says the state should require background checks for most private gun sales. The report also recommends stiffer penalties for those who don’t report a lost or a stolen gun. 22News spoke to one voter who says the culture around guns also needs to change.

“To really curtail, drastically, guns in our country, that’s small.  And there’s still so much opposition to these suggestions as well, I hope it will help,” said Marianna Connolly of Williamsburg.

They are asking the state join a federal program that would share information about people who might be unsuitable to own a firearm because of mental illness.

They also want state officials to provide tax credits for those who purchase a gun safe.
