How accurate is Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction?

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Some people swear by Punxsutawney Phil’s weather predictions. 22News is working for you to explain how many others would never admit Phil to the meteorological hall of fame. This icon’s time-honored predictions are not always as accurate as many may think.

Keep your snow boots handy, Punxsutawney Phil says “Old Man Winter’s” here to stay.

Kelly Trudeau of Westfiled told 22News, “We’ve had so much snow. And there’s really not much you can do when it’s below zero outside; especially with the kids.”

For the last 128 years, the furry groundhog has attracted thousands to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to celebrate this folk tradition. Not everyone is convinced.

“No, cause I live in Vermont and there’s always six more weeks left of winter,” said Jeff Moore of Brattleboro, VT.

“Yes, I do. I wish he was wrong. I’m sick of winter,” said Dennis Maleshefski of Springfield.

The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club says Phil’s predictions are correct 100% of the time.  Our experts say hold the hog because that’s not the case. 22News Stormteam Meteorologist Nick Bannin says Phil has a 39% chance of being correct.

“This groundhog is making a forecast for the entire country. So, no doubt somewhere in the country he’s going to be right. Saying that winter is going to drag on another six weeks.  Well yeah, there’s bound to be someplace in the country where winter has lingered,” said Nick Bannin.

So, buckle your parkas to brave the blast, winter’s chill is going to last, maybe.
