Squatters blamed for fire in vacant Springfield home

The fire started on the second floor

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield fire investigators say squatters may be to blame for a fire in a vacant home in the city’s Bay neighborhood.

Springfield Fire spokesman Dennis Leger told 22News the fire started just after four Friday afternoon in a second floor bedroom at 111 Bowles Street.

Neighbors said the house has been vacant for years, and that homeless people had been staying there.

“One or two on this side.  They left out.  One came in.  Didn’t stay very long. They left again,” Woody Ward told 22News.

The Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad is trying to determine whether someone set the fire.

There was no electrical power to the house.

No one was injured.
