River ice brings flooding concerns

MONSON, Mass. (WWLP) -The ice-covered rivers in eastern Hampden County have the potential for flooding this spring.

There is concern about the Quaboag River in Monson flowing under Route 32 near the Palmer town line.

Monson’s Highway department surveyor, John Morrell, told 22News that for flooding to occur, there would have to be a quick rise in temperature along with heavy rainfall.

Marjorie Sorel of Monson told 22News that it has been years since floodwaters covered Route 32.

“The only thing I know is that it has flooded, but I’ve never seen it flood,” Sorel said.

We’re told that it’s a hopeful sign the river isn’t completely frozen and some water still flowing. It’s seen as keeping the ice level down to help prevent flooding during the warmer months.
