Hartford police shoot and kill man during pursuit

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Authorities say a police pursuit of a man on the streets of Hartford escalated into an exchange of gunfire that ended with the killing of the suspect at the scene.

Connecticut State Police say the incident began with two Hartford police officers observing a car speeding from an area where gunshots were detected early Saturday in the area of Lenox Street. The officers stopped the vehicle on Winchester Street and the driver fled on foot behind nearby homes.

One police officer exchanged gunfire with the suspect during the subsequent foot pursuit. The man was hit and died at the scene.

State police officers are investigating the incident and were withholding the dead man’s name until his relatives are notified the state medical examiner conducts an autopsy.

The officers were identified as Randal Finucane and Craig McLennan.
