NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - After hours of traffic trouble, emergency repairs have been made on a bridge on Interstate 91 northbound in Northampton.
Massachusetts State Police tweeted that the repairs were completed before 2:00 P.M., and that traffic is now moving freely in the area.
Michael Verseckes of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation told 22News that the problem was with the joint between the bridge deck and bridge abutment is due to a combination of age, use, and the freeze-thaw cycle. He said that the bridge in question dates back to 1965, and was listed as being in "fair" condition when it was last rated.
Traffic backups lasted through much of the morning into the early afternoon, and traffic was crawling as far back as Exit 17 in Holyoke.
