Man shot in the head, expected to live, Springfield police say

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A man who was shot in the head late Sunday night is expected to survive his wounds, Springfield police say.

Lt. Trent Hufnagel told 22News that around 11:00 Sunday night, officers found a man with a gunshot wound to the head, lying in the middle of Union Street. He said that police had been called to the area of 513 Union, after receiving a report of shots fired.

The victim was taken to Baystate Medical Center, and is expected to live, Hufnagel said.

There are no suspects in the shooting at this time.

During the overnight hours, police had closed-off the section of Union Street in the area of the shooting Several state and local police officers could be seen searching the area of 513 Union Street, where a homicide had occurred just last month.

In December of 2013, police started investigating a homicide at the same home located at 513 Union Street.  A 21-year-old resident, Abdul-Azeez Baker was found shot multiple times on the second floor, and he later died.

The home sits across from the Dunbar Community Center in the Old Hill neighborhood.
