Cold weather safety tips

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The cold winter weather returned Tuesday and it is here to stay at least a couple of days.

22news is working for you with some cold weather safety tips to protect you, your family, and your home during the frigid weather.

According to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). The first thing you should do is monitor forecasts and storm impacts.

The MEMA website also recommends you to:
-Make sure you stock your home with an emergency supply kit.
Minimize outdoor activities, and check on elderly and those who may need additional assistance.
– Dress warmly, and wear layers if possible.
-Watch out for signs of frostbite and hypothermia.
-Make sure you have efficient heating fuel.
-If using alternative heating methods like a wood stove, take proper precautions and make sure your home is properly ventilated.
-Also remember not to leave your pets outside for long periods of time.
-To keep pipes from freezing keep them properly insulated.  Or keep warm water trickling through them.  If they do freeze, there are methods you can use to unfreeze them.
